OS HISTORICAL ASPECTS OF THE ARITHMETIC TEACHING IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN MATO GROSSO – BRAZIL (1910 – 1930)

Resumo: This essay presents the results of a dissertation on History of Mathematics Education, aimed to study the historical aspects of arithmetic teaching in the context of the primary schools during intuitive pedagogy in Mato Grosso. The methodological contribution considered the treatises between Michel de Certeau’s historiographical operation and the teachings of the movements of the historian's craft in terms of scientific practices to constitute a history. The documents analysed deal with the narratives produced by the school institutions deposited in the public archives of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. Many of those sources were developed in reports by historical characters of Mato Grosso instruction, configured by the institutional representative, i.e., the school director, which in this way enabled us to understand the historical meanings of the arithmetic teaching in the period considered. The analyses helped us identify a consolidated implementation of the intuitive method to teach the disciplinary contents of arithmetic, thus advocating the modernization of ways of teaching, through the circulation and appropriation of books, teaching materials, regulations, and pedagogical ideas linked to the intuitive teaching.

El aporte metodológico consideró los tratados entre la operación historiográfica de Michel de Certeau y las enseñanzas de los movimientos del oficio del historiador en términos de prácticas científicas para constituir una historia. Los documentos analizados tratan de las narrativas producidas por las instituciones escolares depositadas en los archivos públicos del estado brasileño de Mato Grosso. Muchas de esas fuentes fueron desarrolladas en relatos de personajes históricos de la instrucción de Mato Grosso, configurados por el representante institucional, es decir, el director de la escuela, lo que de esta manera nos permitió comprender los significados históricos de la enseñanza de la aritmética en el período considerado. Los análisis nos ayudaron a identificar una implementación consolidada del método intuitivo para enseñar los contenidos disciplinares de la aritmética, abogando así por la modernización de las formas de enseñanza, a través de la circulación y apropiación de libros, materiales didácticos, normativas e ideas pedagógicas vinculadas a la enseñanza intuitiva.Neste artigo, apresentamos os resultados de pesquisa de uma dissertação na temática da História da Educação Matemática, a qual teve por objetivo o estudo dos aspectos históricos do ensino de aritmética no contexto de Grupos Escolares, no período da pedagogia intuitiva em Mato Grosso. A abordagem metodológica considerou os tratados da operação historiográfica de Michel de Certeau, com o ensinamento dos movimentos do ofício do historiador em termos das práticas científicas para constituir uma história. O conjunto documental analisado trata das narrativas produzidas pelas instituições escolares depositadas no Arquivo Público do Mato Grosso. Muitas destas fontes foram elaboradas em relatórios por personagens históricos da instrução mato-grossense, configurados pelo representante institucional, ou seja, o diretor escolar, que desta forma nos possibilitou a análise para compreensão dos significados históricos sobre o ensino de aritmética do período em destaque.
