THE H. B. LÜBSEN'S ELEMENTARY GEOMETRY COMPENDIUM: AN ANALYSIS FROM ITS CONCEPTUAL AND METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES

Resumo:   This paper presents a historical perspective analysis of the H. B. Lübsen Compendium of Elemental Geometry translated from German to Portuguese by Carlos Jansen, professor at the Imperial Collegio D. Pedro II, in 1902. It is based on the theoretical framework of cultural history, studies on the history of textbooks and the history of mathematics education. The study characterizes the context of its circulation as a textbook, the aspects related to its materiality and the methodology adopted by its author related to the teaching of geometry. It observes that this book circulated in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Maranhão. The contents are presented by definitions, problems and theorems that value the theoretical and algebraic aspects as a means of abbreviating the geometric demonstrations. The book is still called practical, by applying the concepts in solving questions related to the calculation of distances, volumes and leveling.

B. Lübsen, traduzido do alemão para o português por Carlos Jansen, professor do Imperial Collegio D. Pedro II, em 1902. Para alcançar esse objetivo, apoia-se no quadro teórico da história cultural, nos estudos sobre história do livro didático e da história da educação matemática. O estudo se atém a caracterizar o contexto de sua circulação como livro didático, os aspectos relacionados à sua materialidade e a metodologia adotada por seu autor relacionada ao ensino da Geometria. Pode-se observar que esse livro circulou pelo Rio de Janeiro, por São Paulo e pelo Maranhão. Os conteúdos são apresentados via definições, problemas e teoremas que valorizam os aspectos teóricos e algébricos como meios de abreviar as demonstrações geométricas.
