Summary: In this paper we aimed to investigate the conceptualization of the intuitive method and its presence in the Lessons of Things Handbook, more specifically with reference to the teaching of mathematics, by Norman Allison Calkins, present in the translation of Rui Barbosa de Oliveira published in Portuguese in 1886. This research was developed in the context of the history of mathematical education, with a theoretical-methodological contribution of cultural history, based on Chartier (1990), Certeau (2007), Choppin (2004), Julia (2001) researchers. The data were collected from books, newspaper clippings, laws, decrees, as well as other records. In the analytical reading of the work cited, interlinking the illustrations related to the contents, activities and the organizations of the exercises, one can perceive the methodological contexts used by the author and endorsed by the translator. The analysis of the sources revealed the existence of "new" pedagogical practices, changes of meaning for number teaching and the introduction of new contents in school arithmetic, as the presence of intuitive method-based teaching in primary mathematics was Calkins (1861, 1881). It was observed the importance of this publication in Portuguese, and of the action of its translator, for the educational developments experienced during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
