Resumo: This article is an excerpt of a master's research presents an analysis of the following research question: "What are the main characteristics of students in the early years of elementary school on the conceptual development of plane figures and the use of declarative knowledge in solving problems involving plane geometry?”. This study was developed in light of the theory of the formation of concepts Klausmeier and Goodwin (1977). The study included 20 children from first to fifth year of elementary school. Participants were interviewed about geometry classes and an assessment consists of two geometric problems. The analysis of the protocols showed that children had little knowledge about defining attributes of the displayed plane figures, which led them to have difficulties in defining and representing the concepts that define figures of the same class, dependent showing up a single representation for each figure flat presented pointing to the most basic levels of development of concept formation: concrete level and identity
