WHAT STUDENTS SAY ABOUT TRANSEXUAL PEOPLE: a comparative study at the federal university of Sergipe (Brazil) and the university of madeira (Portugal):

Resumo: This article presents an analysis of the concept of transgender people, in the course of a comparative study at the University of Madeira, UMa (Portugal) and at the Federal University of Sergipe, UFS (Brazil) on "University students' voices on sexual and gender diversity, its relation to coeducation and pedagogical innovation." In methodological terms a qualitative approach was adopted, with the application of a questionnaire with open and closed questions and the viewing of a short video framing the theme. Content analysis was performed on the data obtained. The compared results show that most of the former students of UMa as those of UFS know and value the concept of transgender person, focused on the subjective construction/reconstruction of identity. There is in the majority of the former students of the UFS a strong awareness of the constraints about the experience of trans gender motivated by the influence of stereotypical social standards. This is justified by the experience of social contexts predominantly paternalistic, with taboos on this theme. Comparing the results, there is a greater involvement of the former students of the Federal University of Sergipe in the discussion of the concept of transgender person. The answers of the former students at the University of Madeira confirm a lower adherence to this initiative.

Desde el punto de vista metodológico, se adoptó un enfoque cualitativo, con la aplicación de un cuestionario con preguntas abiertas y cerradas y el visionado de un breve vídeo que enmarcaba el tema. Se realizó un análisis de contenido de los datos obtenidos. Los resultados comparados muestran que la mayoría de los antiguos alumnos de la UMa como los de la UFS conocen y valoran el concepto de persona transexual, centrado en la construcción/reconstrucción subjetiva de la identidad. Existe en la mayoría de los antiguos alumnos de la UFS una fuerte conciencia de las limitaciones sobre la experiencia del gênero trans motivada por la influencia de los estándares sociales estereotipados. Esto se justifica por la experiencia de contextos sociales predominantemente paternalistas, con tabúes sobre este tema. Comparando los resultados, hay una mayor participación de los ex alumnos de la Universidade Federal de Sergipe en la discusión del concepto de persona transgênera. Las respuestas de los antiguos alumnos de la Universidad de Madeira confirman una menor adhesión a esta iniciativa.Este artigo apresenta uma análise do conceito de pessoas trangênero, no decurso de um estudo comparativo na Universidade da Madeira, UMa (Portugal) e na Universidade Federal de Sergipe, UFS (Brasil) sobre “Vozes dos estudantes universitários sobre a diversidade sexual e de gênero, sua relação com a coeducação e com a inovação pedagógica.” Em termos metodológicos foi adotada uma abordagem qualitativa, com aplicação de um questionário com questões abertas e fechadas e o visionamento de um vídeo curto de enquadramento do tema. Foi feita a análise de conteúdo aos dados obtidos. Os resultados comparados mostram que a maioria dos ex-estudantes da UMa como os da UFS conhecem e valorizam o conceito de pessoa transgênera, centrado na construção/ reconstrução subjetiva da identidade. Existe na maioria dos ex-estudantes da UFS uma forte consciência dos constrangimentos acerca da vivência do gênero trans motivada pela influência de padrões sociais estereotipados. Isso é justificado pela experienciação de contextos sociais predominantemente paternalistas, com tabus sobre esta temática. Comparando os resultados, regista-se um envolvimento maior dos ex-estudantes da Universidade Federal de Sergipe na discussão do conceito de pessoa transgênera.
