Resumo: | Paulicéia Desvairada from Mário de Andrade was the corpus of this study. It was observed how the intense changing context through which São Paulo was passing in the beginning of the 20th century was determinant to the construction of various elements in the poetry of the author’s books and how he inserts himself in this context creating a book about São Paulo, and at the same time, and somehow, about himself. The main objective was to establish relations between the context and the various references existing in the book, besides observing the different ways and degrees of indexicality that these references have in the studied book and how these indices may act as metaphors structuring elements, this way helping in what Jakobson called “duplication of referential”. For this purpose, we used Charles Peirce’s concepts of indices, and also other concepts from the peircean semiotics in order to understand the sign relations found in different dimensions of the book. This made us interrelate the poems and verses with the context of the book as a whole. We tried to keep distance from the simple idea of symbol, and to consider the book, in its integrality, being an indice about São Paulo in the beginning of the 20th century. The study was based on the categories of “manifest indexicality” and “diffuse indexicality”, proposed in this thesis. This was helpful because of the opacity of the literary language, to comprehend the different ways in which the indices are presented in the poems. This way, it was possible to observe that in the studied book there are a series of indications to spaces, actions and people that represented the break in the artistic and behavioral field. It was also possible to notice that these choices bring a series of marginalized people by the urbanization process, putting them into the spotlight, not only poetically but also historically. This happening in an agonistic way and as a result of a complex ideological web that involved the author himself. Further, this study tried to consider indices as elements of poetical construction, putting into check its ability of representing reality and making us think about the reality itself as an element of construction of the art, as well as some ways through which the poetical language may use referentiality without disconsidering the “autonomous” aspect of the art. Finally, when questioning the tenuous relations between art and reality we seek to consider the sign as a poetical and ideological artefact. |

Este trabalho teve como corpus o livro Paulicéia Desvairada, de Mário Andrade. Observamos como o contexto de intensa mudança, pelo qual passava a cidade de São Paulo, no início do século 20, foi determinante para a construção de vários elementos presentes nos poemas desse livro de Mário de Andrade. Além disso, interessa-nos saber como esse sujeito insere-se neste contexto fazendo um livro sobre essa cidade, mas ao mesmo tempo, e de certa forma, sobre ele mesmo. Nesse sentido, nosso objetivo central foi estabelecer relações entre o contexto da obra e as várias referências presentes no livro. Além de observar as diversas formas e graus de indexicalidade que estas referências possuem na obra estudada e como tais índices podem atuar como elementos estruturadores de metáforas, ajudando assim naquilo de Jakobson (2001) chamou de “duplicação da referencialidade”. Utilizamos para tanto, os conceitos de índices de Charles Peirce (2005; 2014), assim como alguns outros conceitos da semiótica peirciana, para compreender as relações sígnicas presentes em diversas dimensões da obra. Isto nos obrigou a interrelacionar os poemas, e mesmo versos, com o contexto da obra como um todo. Tentamos nos afastar da mera noção de símbolo, para pensar no livro, em sua intregalidade, sendo um índice sobre São Paulo do início do século XX. Para tanto, dividimos o estudo em três capítulos. Sendo o primeiro um capítulo mais teórico, denominado “Signos, referência e metáfora”. Em seguida, no capítulo: Da São Paulo à Paulicéia Desvairada: os caminhos de uma cidade e de uma poesia em transformação, trouxemos para o debate uma reflexão histórica e sociológica sobre o processo de construção desta metrópole e as fissuras de resistências produzidas no coração de uma modernidade excludente, assim como a obra, em si, a partir da sua crítica, inserir-se-á neste contexto. Por último, em: Índices e metáforas em Paulicéia Desvairada, temos o capítulo que prioriza as análises, propriamente ditas, usando os poemas quase sempre em sua integridade e pensando nestes em relação ao livro e sua completude. Nosso percurso buscou ancorar-se nas categorias de “índexicalidade manifesta” e “índexicalidade difusa”, propostas nesta tese, o que nos ajudou, devido à opacidade da linguagem literária, a compreender as diferentes formas como os índices se apresentam nos poemas. Sendo assim, pudemos constatar que no livro estudado há uma série de indicações a espaços, ações e sujeitos, que representaram ruptura no campo artístico e comportamental. E que tais escolhas traz à tona uma série de marginalizados pelo processo de urbanização, dando-lhes destaque, não só poético, mas também histórico. Mais que isso, este trabalho buscou pensar os índices como elementos de construção poética, colocando em xeque sua capacidade representar a realidade e nos obrigando a pensar a própria realidade como elemento de construção da arte.
