A hymn for the city: disputes over the representation of memory and identity through civic hymns at Feira de Santana in the 20th century

Resumo: This article investigates how different municipal hymns were produced to represent the community of Feira de Santana (Bahia), between the end of the nineteenth century and the course of the twentieth century, and how one of these hymns was adopted as an official song of society. It is demonstrated because the other hymns were forgotten and how this forgetfulness relates to the expectations of the local society for producing a symbol capable of constructing a memory considered more appropriate to its self-image and its expectations for the future.
