Resumo: The objective of this research is to understand the social representations of teachers about immigrant students. The method used in the investigation phase was the use of a qualitative approach based on the Theory of Social Representations. The inquiry was developed with 33 professors of both sexes, inserted in a public education institution located in central São Paulo. For data collection, two questionnaires were used: one structured and the other semi-structured. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Descending Hierarchical Classification. From the organized classes it was possible to infer 5 categories namely: reception of immigrants in the school; difficulty in learning the non-native language; lack of preparation for reception; possibilities for socializing; difficulties of adaptation and integration. It was considered that the school as well as the professors lack the support and infrastructure to develop a work that contributes to the learning of immigrant students.

El método utilizado en la fase de investigación fue el uso de un enfoque cualitativo basado en la Teoría de las Representaciones Sociales. La investigación se desarrolló con 33 docentes de ambos os sexos, insertados en una institución educativa pública ubicada en la región central de São Paulo. Para la recogida de datos se utilizaron dos cuestionarios, uno estructurado y otro semiestructurado. Los datos se analizaron mediante estadística descriptiva y clasificación jerárquica descendente. De las clases organizadas fue posible inferir 5 categorías, a saber: recepción de inmigrantes en la escuela; dificultad para aprender el idioma no nativo; falta de preparación para la recepción; posibilidades de vida; dificultades de adaptación e integración. Se consideró que la escuela, así como los docentes, carece de apoyo e infraestructura para desarrollar un trabajo que contribuya al aprendizaje de los estudiantes inmigrantes.O objetivo desta pesquisa é compreender as representações sociais de professores sobre alunos imigrantes. O método utilizado na fase de investigação foi à utilização de uma pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa pautada na Teoria das Representações Sociais. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida com 33 professores de ambos os sexos, inseridos em instituição de ensino pública localizada na região central de São Paulo. Para a coleta dos dados utilizou-se dois questionários sendo um estruturado e outro semiestruturado. Os dados foram analisados por meio da estatística descritiva e da Classificação Hierárquica Descendente. A partir das classes organizadas foi possível inferir 5 categorias a saber: recepção de imigrantes na escola; dificuldade de aprendizagem da língua não materna; falta de preparação para o acolhimento; possibilidades de convívio; dificuldades de adaptação e integração.
