Teachers' Social Representations About Immigrant Students

The objective of this research is to understand the social representations of teachers about immigrant students. The method used in the investigation phase was the use of a qualitative approach based on the Theory of Social Representations. The inquiry was developed with 33 professors of both sexes, inserted in a public education institution located in central São Paulo. For data collection, two questionnaires were used: one structured and the other semi-structured. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Descending Hierarchical Classification. From the organized classes it was possible to infer 5 categories namely: reception of immigrants in the school; difficulty in learning the non-native language; lack of preparation for reception; possibilities for socializing; difficulties of adaptation and integration. It was considered that the school as well as the professors lack the support and infrastructure to develop a work that contributes to the learning of immigrant students.
