Resumo: In this paper, we explore the field of lexical semantics of Brazilian Sign Language by distancing ourselves from what Slobin (2015[2008]) has referred to as the tyranny of glosses in sign language research. Our goal is twofold: to argue against the fallacies and shortfalls of continuing to associate signs with words in research on the grammar and semantics of Libras; and to demonstrate the refinements made possible by investigating Libras in its own terms. Starting with a particular sign as stimulus, participants produced examples of sentences and listed potential synonyms for the sign in the contexts they offered. By contrasting the alternative signs semantically, we identified several paradigmatic networks associated with the sign being investigated, showing that the use of Libras as metalanguage allows us to understand the semantics of signs beyond the biases and simplifications of isolated words in Portuguese.
