Muito já se falou sobre o compositor e suas influências zen-budistas e artísticas na definição do silêncio e de sua obra mais conhecida, 4'33''. Contudo, ao verificarmos a bibliografia dedicada a Cage, sentimos falta de análises mais profundas sobre a relação dele com McLuhan, relação esta que defendemos aqui ser muito mais extensa do que a literatura habitual sobre Cage nos leva a acreditar. Desta maneira, a partir de análises de fontes bibliográficas, sonoras e audiovisuais, estabelecemos nossa fundamentação teórica por meio de contextualização histórica e cultural da carreira artística de J. Cage em sua trajetória até peça 4'33'', em função dos conceitos de aldeia global, meios quentes e frios, espaço visual e acústico, entre outros, de Marshall McLuhan, para então analisar quatro obras de John Cage - a saber, 4'33'', Reunion, 4'33'' performada no vídeo A Tribute to John Cage, de Nam June Paik, e One¹¹ - e verificar a extensão das ideias do teórico canadense nessas diferentes formas de apresentação do silêncio.Abstract: This dissertation addresses the resonance of Canadian theorist Marshall McLuhan's ideas on John Cage's presentation of silence. Much has been said about the composer and his Zen-Buddhist and artistic influences on the definition of silence and his best-known work, 4'33''. However, when we check the bibliography dedicated to Cage, we feel there is a lack of deeper analyses of his relationship with McLuhan, a relationship that we argue here is much more extensive than the usual literature on Cage leads us to believe. Thus, based on the analysis of bibliographic and audiovisual sources, we establish our theoretical foundation around a historical and cultural contextualization of J.
