Peixes foram pareados por quatro dias, ao longo dos quais foram identificados o dominante e submisso na dupla. Posteriormente, foram individualmente submetidos ao teste de esquiva inibitória, cujo aparato se constituiu num aquário retangular onde um estímulo aversivo (barra de ferro controlada por um sistema de roldanas) ocupava cerca de 50% da sua extensão; o estímulo era abaixado toda vez que o peixe se dirigia para esse lado (fase 1). Imediatamente após o teste, o grau hierárquico de dominância dos animais foi invertido, peixes dominantes se tornaram submissos e peixes submissos se tornaram dominantes. Os indivíduos permaneceram pareados por mais quatro dias e novamente realizaram o teste de memória aversiva (fase 2). O tempo que o animal demorou a se dirigir a área do estímulo, número de vezes que ele se dirigiu a essa área e tempo decorrido até o peixe não se dirigir mais a essa área foram registrados. Peixes dominantes que mantiveram essa posição hierárquica e aqueles que sofreram inversão do status social obtiveram o melhor desempenho, reduzindo o total de idas em direção ao estímulo aversivo e o tempo para evitá-lo quando realizaram o teste pela segunda vez. Concluímos que o status social de dominância favorece o processo de aprendizagem - animais dominantes apresentaram melhor desempenho na evocação da memória comparativamente aos submissos e esse desempenho independe da posição hierárquica assumida posteriormente, sugerindo que a submissão hierárquica não compromete a consolidação das informações aprendidas. Animais submissos, por outro lado, apresentam comprometimento da memória, com baixo desempenho no processo de aprendizagem independente do grau hierárquico assumido posteriormente a essa fase de aquisição da informação. Palavras – chave: interação social; estresse; memória; Astyanax altiparanae.abstract: The aim of this study was testing the role of dominance hierarchy in learning and memory of Astyanax altiparanae. Adults fishes were paired for four days, during which were identified as dominant and subordinate. Subsequently, the animals were individually submitted to the inhibitory avoidance test, which apparatus is constituted of a rectangular tank in which an aversive stimulus (iron rod controlled by a pulley system) occupied about 50% of its length; the stimulus was triggered when the fish swam towards it (phase 1). After completing the test, the dominance hierarchy was reversed, so dominant fishes became subordinate and subordinate became dominant. Subjects were paired for four days more and then performed the aversive memory tested again (phase 2). Data concerning the time for the fish to address the area of the stimulus, number of times they went to that area and time needed until they avoid this area were recorded. Dominant individuals who maintained this status as well as the dominant fish who suffered reversal of this hierarchy achieved the best performance, reducing total of visits towards the aversive stimulus and the time to avoid it when they repeated the avoidance task. We conclude that dominant animals have better performance in information acquisition (learning) compared to subordinate, dominant animals showed better performance for memory recall when compared to subordinate and that this performance is independent of the hierarchical position subsequently assumed, suggesting that the hierarchical submission doesn’t compromise the consolidation of information learned. Subordinate animals, on the other hand, demonstrated impairments in associative memory, with the worst performance in the learning process and therefore in evoking this memory, independently of the hierarchical level assumed later on.
