Resumo: This article discusses the popularization of childcare in Bahia by looking at the assistance provided by the Institute for the Protection and Assistance of Childhood in Bahia (IPAI-BA). At the same time that philanthropic doctors filled a gap in public assistance in the Brazilian Republic, they asserted themselves as a professional category and undertook strategies for social organization in an evolutionary perspective in the light of eugenics. Through the strategy of Dr. Alfredo Ferreira de Magalhães (1873-1943) to occupy the direction of the Normal School in the capital, it can be seen how the discourse of eugenics not only circulated among medical intellectuals in the First Republic, but was amplified in order to reach the poor population and change their customs through the commitment of teachers to the eugenic ideals.

Ao mesmo tempo em que estes médicos filantropos preenchiam uma lacuna da República brasileira na assistência pública, afirmavam-se como categoria profissional e empreendiam estratégias de organização social numa perspectiva evolucionista, à luz da eugenia.
