DEGREE OF INTERNATIONALIZATION, SKILLS. INTERNATIONAL, AND ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE OF SMEs: CASE STUDIES IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL

Resumo: | Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) internationalized are emerging in large numbers around the world, and they tend to be more dynamic and to grow faster than strictly domestic companies (FILLIS, 2007). As the degree of internationalization (GRI) of SMEs increase, there is the development of new international skills improving the organizational performance (FLORIANI, 2010); (FLORIANI & FLEURY, 2012). This study aimed to investigate the influence of the GRI in developing new international expertise and explain the relationship with organizational performance of SMEs in southern Brazil. We used a qualitative approach, using a multiple case studies, carried out in SMEs. Data were collected by documentary and field research, semi-structured interviews being applied, with content analysis and support of Atlas.ti software. The results showed that the South SMEs in Brazil are experiencing input modes in the complex exterior, two of them with greater involvement of resources than export. It has been found that internationalization makes companies develop international skills, thus improving organizational performance. |

It has been found that internationalization makes companies develop international skills, thus improving organizational performance.Las Pequeñas y Medias Empresas (PMEs) internacionalizadas están surgiendo en gran número en todo el mundo, y ellas tienden a ser más dinámicas y a crecer más rápido de que las empresas estrictamente nacionales (FILLIS, 2007). Conforme el grado de internacionalización (GRI) de las PMEs aumenta, ocurre el desarrollo de nuevas competencias internacionales mejorando el desempeño organizacional (FLORIANI, 2010); (FLORIANI & FLEURY, 2012). Así, este estudio tuvo cómo objetivo investigar la influencia del GRI en el desarrollo de nuevas competencias internacionales y explicar la relación con el desempeño organizacional de las PMEs del sur de Brasil. Se utilizó el abordaje cualitativo, por medio de estudios de casos múltiples, realizado en PMEs. Los datos fueron recolectados por investigación documental y de campo, siendo aplicadas entrevistas semiestruturadas, con análisis de contenido y apoyo del software Atlas.ti. Los resultados identificaron que las PMEs del Sur del Brasil están experimentando modos de entrada en el exterior más complejos, siendo que dos de ellas con mayor inversión de recursos que solamente la exportación. Fue constatado que la internacionalización hace con que las empresas desarrollen competencias internacionales, mejorando consecuentemente su desempeño organizacional.As Pequenas e Médias Empresas (PMEs) internacionalizadas estão surgindo em grande número em todo o mundo, e elas tendem a ser mais dinâmicas e a crescerem mais rápido do que as empresas estritamente nacionais (FILLIS, 2007). Conforme o grau de internacionalização (GRI) das PME’s aumentam há o desenvolvimento de novas competências internacionais melhorando o desempenho organizacional (FLORIANI, 2010); (FLORIANI & FLEURY, 2012). Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo investigar a influência do GRI no desenvolvimento de novas competências internacionais e explicar a relação com o desempenho organizacional das PMEs do sul do Brasil. Utilizou-se a abordagem qualitativa, por meio de estudos de casos múltiplo, realizado em PMEs. Os dados foram coletados por pesquisa documental e de campo, sendo aplicadas entrevistas semiestruturadas, com análise de conteúdo e apoio do software Atlas.ti.
