Family changes due to the hospitalization of a child in a pediatric intensive care unit

Resumo: The objective of study was to understand the changes/implications that occurs in a family after the hospitalization of a child in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). A descriptive study, with a qualitative approach. Data were collected in the period of March to June 2007, through semi-structured interviews carried out with 21 parents of children admitted in a PICU of a University Hospital located in the northwest area of Paraná State. The results showed the family, even when facing the hospitalization and the risk of death of a family member, as well as the separation of other family members from the mother who is keeping company to the sick child, tries to establish means to maintain united and to follow its routine. The study revealed the importance of the support to the relatives of a hospitalized child, as an essential part of the caring process, thus contributing to turn it indubitably humanized.

The study revealed the importance of the support to the relatives of a hospitalized child, as an essential part of the caring process, thus contributing to turn it indubitably humanized.  El objective fue comprender las alteraciones/implicaciones familiares decurrentes de la internación de un hijo en una Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Pediátrica (UCIP), Se trata de un estudio descriptivo, con abordaje cualitativo. Los datos fueron recogidos en el período de marzo a junio de 2007, por medio de entrevistas semiestructuradas junto a 21 padres de niños internados en la UCIP de un Hospital Universitario ubicado en la región noroeste de Paraná. Los resultados demonstraram que la familia, mismo delante de la internación y de la convivencia con el riego de muerte del hijo, del alejamiento entre los demás miembros de la familia con relación al niño enfermo y a la madre, procura establecer medios para mantenerse unida y seguir su rutina. El estudio reveló la importancia del soporte a los familiares de los niños internados, en cuanto parte esencial del proceso de cuidar, contribuyendo así, para que este cuidar se torne efectivamente humanizado.O objetivo do estudo foi compreender as alterações/implicações familiares decorrentes da internação de um filho em uma Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Pediátrica (UTIP). Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa. Os dados foram coletados no período de março a junho de 2007, por meio de entrevistas semi-estruturadas junto a 21 pais de crianças internadas na UTIP de um Hospital Universitário localizado na região noroeste do Paraná. Os resultados demonstraram que a família, mesmo diante da internação e da convivência com o risco de morte do filho, do afastamento  entre os demais membros da família em relação à criança doente e à mãe, procura estabelecer meios para manter-se unida e seguir sua rotina.
