Resumo: Death is one of the great mysteries of life. We live in a death denying-society. This aim of the present qualitative study was to see if undergraduate Nursing students are prepared to face death and dying during training. Seven students enrolled in the discipline “Supervised Training II”, the last discipline of the course were interviewed using a semi-structured script, and the collected data were submitted to content analysis. The following categories were discussed: facing death in daily life, reaction to death, and dying in training. It was observed that the process of death and dying is not approached in a manner that supplies the students’ needs in routine situations that require them to provide dying patients humane conditions to die.

Vivimos en una sociedad negadora de la muerte. Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo analizar el proceso de formación del estudiante de grado en Enfermería de la UEFS para enfrentar la muerte y el morir. Se trata de un estudio cualitativo. Los sujetos fueron siete alumnos regularmente matriculados en la asignatura Práctica Supervisión II, la última del curso. Para la toma de datos se utilizó la entrevista con cuestionario semi-estructurado y para el análisis, el método de análisis de contenido. Se discutieron las siguientes categorías: encarando la muerte en el día a día, reacción frente a la muerte y el proceso de muerte y el morir en la formación. Se hizo evidente que el proceso de muerte y de morir no viene siendo trabajado para que se ajuste a las necesidades de los alumnos. Estos, en su quehacer diario, viven situaciones que exigen instrumentalización en la atención a la persona para que ésta tenga una muerte digna.A morte é um dos grandes mistérios da vida. Vivemos em uma sociedade negadora da morte. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo conhecer o preparo para o enfrentamento da morte e o morrer no processo de formação do estudante de graduação em enfermagem da Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS), Bahia. Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo. Os sujeitos foram sete alunos regularmente matriculados na disciplina Estágio Supervisionado II, último do curso. Para coleta de dados utilizou-se entrevista com roteiro semi-estruturado e para análise, o método de análise de conteúdo. Foram discutidas as categorias: encarando a morte no cotidiano, reação diante da morte e o processo de morte e o morrer na formação.
