Resumo: Based on Lazarus and Folkman’s theory about stress and coping, this research aimed at answering questions related to how nurses, who work in two specialized units of a general hospital, evaluate their working environment, their health and how they manage with stressing situations. In the unit of infectious diseases, the nurses’ evaluation of their working environment did not surpass the limits of what is considered as acceptable. In the unit of hematological alterations, the results showed higher stress levels. In both units, the evaluation of their health was considered as satisfactory and the coping strategies were similar.

En la unidad de enfermedades infecciosas, la evaluación, que los enfermeros hicieron de su ambiente de trabajo, no sobrepasó los límites de lo que se considera aceptable. En la unidad de alteraciones hematológicas, los resultados mostraron niveles más altos de estrés. En ambas unidades, la evaluación de su salud fue considerada satisfactoria y las estrategias de enfrentamiento fueron semejantesBaseada na teoria de Lazarus e Folkman sobre estresse e enfrentamento, esta pesquisa propôs-se a responder questões relacionadas a como enfermeiros, que trabalham em duas unidades especializadas num hospital geral, avaliam seu ambiente de trabalho, sua saúde e como lidam com situações estressantes.
