The Brazilian economy was deeply affected by trade opening in the 90's. The manufacturing sector was particularly affected, since it was already debilitated by the crisis of the preceding decade. This article approaches the corresponding effects on 20 small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) producing capital goods in Santa Catarina. Based on field research carried on through interviews, and drawing on the debate about firm differences, the study focuses the SME's competitive situations in relation with the individual trajectories of the enterprises. It is argued that the relationships involving broad economic changes, the behaviour of the firms and competitiveness are quite complex.
