Childhood Education in Santiago Norte and the challenges of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Resumo: | The main point of this research is to explain the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on early childhood education in the northern region of Santiago island, Cape Verde. It was used a qualitative methodological approach to gather data by carrying out interviews. In Cape Verde, it is concluded, at the socio-educational level, childhood education suffered the impact of Covid-19, with a special focus on the most disadvantaged families in the social, economic and cultural spheres. Relatively to pedagogical practices, Covid-19 had a great psycho-pedagogical impact, as there were changes in daily activities, a fact that interfered with pedagogical action, especially in terms of encouraging autonomy and the development of interpersonal relationships between children, despite having spent a longer time with their families at home. At the professional level, the precariousness of working relationships weighed heavily during the pandemic, especially in some private kindergartens, which had difficulties and delays in salary levels, and social security was not able to cover or participate in all cases. Thus, there is a need for the State to assume more effectively the professionals of pre-school education. |

Thus, there is a need for the State to assume more effectively the professionals of pre-school education.El presente estudio pretende aclarar el impacto de la pandemia de Covid-19 en la educación preescolar en la región de Santiago Norte, en la isla de Santiago, Cabo Verde. El enfoque metodológico utilizado fue de tipo cualitativo y los datos se recogieron mediante la técnica de la entrevista. En Cabo Verde, se concluye, a nivel socioeducativo, la educación inicial ha sufrido el impacto de Covid-19, con especial atención a las familias más desfavorecidas social, económica y culturalmente. A nivel de las prácticas pedagógicas, la pandemia tuvo un gran impacto psicopedagógico porque se produjeron cambios en las actividades cotidianas, hecho que interfirió en la acción pedagógica, sobre todo en lo que se refiere al estímulo de la autonomía y al desarrollo de las relaciones interpersonales de los niños, aunque permanecieran más tiempo con sus familias en casa. A nivel profesional, la precariedad de las relaciones laborales pesó mucho durante la pandemia, principalmente en algunos jardines privados, que tuvieron dificultades y retrasos en cuanto a los sueldos, y el sistema de seguridad social no pudo cubrir o contribuir en todos los casos. Por lo tanto, es necesario que el Estado asuma con mayor eficacia a los profesionales de la educación preescolar.O presente estudo tem como objetivo clarificar o impacto da pandemia da Covid-19 na educação pré-escolar na região de Santiago Norte, ilha de Santiago, Cabo Verde. A abordagem metodológica usada foi do tipo qualitativa e os dados foram recolhidos usando a técnica da entrevista. Em Cabo Verde, conclui-se, no plano socioeducativo, a educação de infância sofreu o impacto da Covid-19, com especial incidência nas famílias mais desfavorecidas no plano social, económico e cultural. Ao nível das práticas pedagógicas, a pandemia teve um grande impacto psicopedagógico, pois houve modificações nas atividades diárias, facto que interferiu na ação pedagógica, sobretudo em termos de estímulo à autonomia e desenvolvimento de relações interpessoais entre as crianças, embora tenham ficado mais tempo com as famílias em casa. No plano profissional, a precariedade das relações de trabalho pesou durante a pandemia, principalmente em alguns jardins privados, que tiveram dificuldades e atrasos em nível salarial, e a previdência social não pôde cobrir ou comparticipar em todos os casos. Sendo assim, vislumbra-se a necessidade de o Estado[1] assumir com maior efetividade as profissionais da educação pré-escolar.
