This article presents different theoretical perspectives of International Relations and their different proposals for peacebuilding. The main objective of this research is to observe the performance of the UN through the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) from a post-colonial perspective, in order to understand how the liberal concept of peacebuilding that guides the institution is related to the lack of agency and local participation in this intervention. The methodology used was qualitative and exploratory bibliographical research. Postcolonial theory was mobilized in order to highlight the common historical epistemology present in liberal theory and in the cosmopolitan ideas of Critical Theory, shedding light on its proposals and limitations and seeking to analyze how their efforts to impose a supposed universalist character of European and Western values ​​resulted in a top-down format of thought and execution of humanitarian actions, where the local agency for building peace and resolving conflicts in territories non-Westerns are marginalized, and the ability of local peoples to articulate themselves as agents of change in their own reality is subjugated by the methods of large foreign international organizations.
