Resumo: | Feminist theory has been engaged in identifying and contesting the concealment of relevant gender-based differences in the development of traditional topics in the history of philosophy. Within contemporary critical theory, authors such as Nancy Fraser and Amy Allen address significant criticisms to Jürgen Habermas, showing that the foundations of his “critical social theory” tend to neglect the main structures according to which women’s subordination is socially reproduced. Their main criticisms are directed against the thesis of systemic colonization, which would be unable to encompass power relations anchored inside the domains of society’s symbolic reproduction, resulting in a “depoliticized” understanding of lifeworld. This paper intends to show that although both authors share similar criticisms about the gender blindness in Habermas’s work, the way they intend to overcome it points to quite different theoretical developments. As a main objective, we seek to evaluate these developments and argue that both ways of overcoming involve complementary limitations, which require a continuous integration of gender subordination critique with the broader field of normative political theory. |
