From the “'pai-de-santo' mobile phone” to the “payphone mobile phone”: humor, conflict and new sociocultural practices in the appropriation of mobile phones by low-income groups

Resumo: This paper explores an issue rarely discussed in ciberculture studies: the use of mobile phones by low-income groups. Using the ethnographic method, I analyse the strategies employed by the dwellers of Morro São Jorge to exercise – rather precariously – their right to communication. I argue that such strategies engender new sociocultural practices that update older ones, especially regarding the use of public payphones and in the practice of making collect calls.

Utilizando el método etnográfico, analizo las estrategias empleadas por los habitantes del Morro São Jorge para que exercan – precariamente – su derecho a la comunicación. El argumento es que tales estrategias reactualizan prácticas anteriores, especialmente aquellas relacionas con el uso de teléfonos públicos y en la práctica de hacer llamadas a cobro revertido.Este artigo explora um tema pouco discutido no campo da cibercultura: o uso do telefone celular por grupos populares. Utilizando o método etnográfico, analiso as estratégias empregadas pelos moradores do Morro São Jorge para exercerem seu direito à comunicação, ainda que precariamente.
