Resumo: This work presents the results of studies, observation and exploratory research about the university presses in Brazil, considering the challenges and tensions involved in the institutionalization of their practices. These refer especially to the academic commitment in regard to the market imperatives; the valorization of journals as privileged vehicles for scientific communication; and the structural, bureaucratic and financial conditions of the publishing companies in face of the possibilities to reconcile the means of production and these same conditions. This work also highlights the positioning of university publishers in favor of the academic ideal, present in all testimonies, which indicates the need to reassess the structures and means of productions without losing sight of the political and social dimensions of the publishing companies and the institutional commitment of the university.

Realiza pesquisa bibliográfica e entrevistas com diretores das editoras universitárias brasileiras.
