Alfredo Kuffó and the uses of the past: micro-stories of a photo collection

Resumo: The aim of this article is to reflect on the uses, circulation and evaluation of what is officially known as photographic heritage in a specific case of the ecuadorian context. I will refer to a group of photographies collected by Alfredo Kuffó Anchundia, who has collected historic images for approximately 50 years in a small town located in the coast region of Ecuador. What I propose is that the practice of this collector and the particular treatment he has given to the group of historical photographies compose subaltern micro-stories opposed to the official discourses about memory and cultural heritage in the visual archive. The theoretical-methodological approach that I present comes from the approaches of visual anthropology, thus I will resort to the ethnographic description and understanding of historical photographs as research data.

Para ello haré referencia a un grupo de fotografías reunidas por Alfredo Kuffó Anchundia, quien ha recolectado imágenes históricas desde hace aproximadamente 50 años en un pequeño poblado localizado en la costa ecuatoriana. Lo que propongo es que la práctica de este recolector así como el tratamiento particular que ha dado al conjunto de fotografías históricas componen microrelatos subalternos que se oponen a los discursos oficiales en relación a la memoria y el patrimonio en el archivo visual. El enfoque teórico-metodológico que utilizaré viene de los planteamientos de la antropología visual y por lo tanto recurro a la descripción etnográfica y al entendimiento de las fotografías históricas como datos de investigación.O objetivo deste artigo é refletir sobre os usos, circulação e apreciação daquilo que se conhece oficialmente como património documental fotográfico num caso específico do contexto equatoriano. Para isso, farei referência a um grupo de fotografias reunidas por Alfredo Kuffó Anchundia, que reuniu imagens históricas desde aproximadamente 50 anos de um pequeno povoado localizado na costa equatoriana. O que proponho é que a prática deste colecionador, assim como o tratamento particular que deu ao conjunto de fotografias históricas, compõem micro-relatos subalternos que se opõem aos discursos oficiais em relação à memória e ao património no arquivo visual.
