Presents a brief history of the emergence of Digital Repositories, their role and importance in the field of scientific communication, as well as their typologies, emphasizing the Institutional Repositories of Brazilian Federal Universities, which store and preserve the intellectual production of academic communities and allow access and use of these productions through the search and retrieval of information. Discusses about indexing, its modalities and highlights the need to create Indexing Policies with guidelines, which will guide the indexer in decision making and in the indexing process, aiming at the effectiveness of information retrieval in systematized environments such as Institutional Repositories. General objective is to analyze the guidelines concerning indexing practices in Brazilian Institutional Repositories. Specifically aims to: identify the Federal Institutions of Higher Education in Brazil that have Institutional Repositories; check the documents available in the Institutional Repositories identified with a view to verifying possible guidelines on indexing practices in these environments; propose improvements for indexing in these informational environments. Uses as methodology the bibliographic, documentary, exploratory and descriptive research with a qualitative and quantitative approach. Presents as results an overview of the guidelines related to indexing in the Institutional Repositories analyzed.
