Professional identity construction: meanings of work for psychologists

Resumo: Apart from the legal prerogative, the study of graduates’ profiles brings elements that enable understanding of the processes in identity construction of a given professional category. The objective of this research was to comprehend in which manner is the relationship between the construction of identity and the attributed tenor of the psychology profession. Ten graduates from a public federal university were interviewed and the results were submitted for analysis. The emerging thematic categories psy identity construction, and bond with the role of Psychologist, present evidence that the relationship between catalysts is mediated by the following trio of factors: university trajectory, professional practice and identity references. The results permit us to ratify the interdependence of elements, indicating a necessity to strengthen the training and formation and agendas designated to explore the meaning and significance of work.

El objetivo de esa investigación fue comprender de qué manera ocurre la relación entre la construcción de identidad y los sentidos asignados a la profesión de psicólogo. Se entrevistó a diez egresados de una universidad pública federal y el corpus resultante fue sometido al análisis de contenido. Las categorías temáticas emergentes - construcción de identidad y vinculación con el rol de psicólogo - muestran que la relación entre constructos está mediada por una tríada compuesta por la trayectoria universitaria, la práctica profesional y referenciales identitarios. Los resultados ratifican la interdependencia de los constructos, señalan la necesidad de fortalecer la formación e indican agendas dirigidas a explorar los significados del trabajo.Estudar o perfil de egressos de um curso universitário, para além de ser prerrogativa legal, traz elementos que permitem compreender os processos de construção identitária de uma categoria profissional. O objetivo dessa investigação foi compreender de que modo se dá a relação entre a construção identitária e os sentidos atribuídos à profissão de psicólogo. Para tanto, foram entrevistados dez egressos de uma universidade pública federal e o corpus resultante foi submetido à análise de conteúdo. As categorias temáticas emergentes - construção identitária psi e vinculação com o papel de psicólogo - evidenciam que a relação entre os constructos é mediada por uma tríade composta pela trajetória universitária, o exercício profissional e referenciais identitários.
