Case method: a report on its effectiveness and applicability in accounting teaching

Purpose: To investigate the effectiveness and applicability of the case method to students of the master's degree in accounting of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). Methodology: The study is characterized as descriptive and data collection was through a survey with open questions after the application of a case. Data treatment was performed through content analysis with the aid of ATLAS.ti® software.  Results: Regarding effectiveness, the interaction of students from discussions in small groups was highlighted, and later, in the large group, the contribution to the solving of the case with a deeper discussion. Regarding the applicability, the results demonstrate the need for using other active methodologies in case solving, and the most cited example by the students has been the role-playing method. The difficulties and limitations identified during the educational intervention were also highlighted. Among them, the limited time available for the application of this method and the difficulty of finding good cases to apply in the classroom. Contributions of the study: The study contributes to the discussions about the adoption of active methodologies, or what allows the identification of strengths and weaknesses, as well as allowing, as a consequence, suggestions for optimizing and improvement of the teaching-learning process.
