This article analyzes the importance of the concept of conservatism in the social theory of Florestan Fernandes (1920-1955). Being one of the main strands of modern political thought alongside liberalism and socialism, conservatism has been commonly studied through reiterations and reinforcements of its assumptions such as, for example, constitutional attachment, the valuation of inequality as a form of incentive, the ontological perspective based on the idea of ​​body and soul and the appreciation of freedom of property. Florestan, on the contrary, carries out a critique where he emphasizes the question of the human condition, democratic radicalism, human formation and the need for a civilized civil society as pillars of his critical perspective of this political aspect. Thus, in addition to what was proposed, the present study fills a thematic and conceptual gap in the studies developed on the author to date.
