Furthermore, older adults engage in sedentary behavior (SB) for approximately 10 hours per day, which may exacerbate the negative effects of aging on one's health. According to dual-process models, such as the affective-reflective theory of physical inactivity and exercise, PA and SB are influenced by two mental processes. The automatic affective valuation formed by pleasant or unpleasant experiences during the activity can lead to an impulse to engage or abandon this behavior. This response serves as the foundation for reflective evaluation, which is responsible for conscious decision-making and can weaken or strengthen this impulse, leading to change plans. If self-control resources are available, such as inhibitory control, it will determine how dominant a mental process is in influencing behavior. Investigating these little-known assumptions in the older population can advance our understanding of the decision-making processes for an active lifestyle, making it easier to take steps that encourage a change in behavior. In this thesis, two studies were included that investigated the role of automatic affective and reflective processes in PA and SB in older adults. In the first study, the early effects of 3 months of the COVID-19 pandemic on reflective processes related to PA were assessed, as well as the potential changes in these processes with PA and SB among older adults with hypertension. In the second study, the role of inhibitory control in moderating the association between the implicit-explicit discrepancy and PA and SB in older adults was analyzed. In conclusion, the findings show that both automatic affective and reflective processes influence PA behavior in older adults via inhibitory control.
