Resumo: Nursing professionals are recognized as being more vulnerable to the risks of contamination by biological agents due to accidents with sharps, with possibility of transmission of infectious diseases such as hepatitis B and C and AIDS. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the occurrence of occupational exposure to biological fluids due to accidents with sharps in the nursing team of two hospitals of the public network of Aracaju/SE. This is a descriptive and exploratory cross-sectional study conducted by interviewing professionals from the nursing team of the Hospital de Cirurgia and the Hospital de Urgências de Sergipe between August 2013 and February 2014. Data collection was done through a questionnaire previously prepared for this study. The project was approved by the committee of ethics and research with human beings of the Federal University of Sergipe under protocol nº: CAAE - 0131.0.107.000-10. Numerical variables were described as mean and standard deviation. The categorical variables were described with simple frequencies and percentage, and, for the outcome-variables, 95% confidence interval. To analyze the factors associated with the accident event, logistic regression was used and the simple and adjusted odds ratios were calculated. Of the 747 nursing professionals surveyed: 42% were nursing assistants, 45.8% nursing technicians and 12.2% nurses. The mean age was 38.5 years, with a minimum of 20 and the maximum of 66 years of age, being 79.1% female and 20.9% male. A high percentage of individuals were not immunized against Hepatitis B. 53.9% (403) reported having suffered accidents with sharps. The variables associated with an increased risk of accidents were female (p <0.0001), daytime work schedule (p = 0.018) and the nursing and technical assistant professions (p <0.0001). A large part of the accidents occurred due to needle recapping and inappropriate disposal of these materials due to lack of attention. More than a third of the victims reported that they did not report the accident. The results show that these professionals maintain attitudes of risk that must be intensively combated with policies of health education, also reinforcing the importance of the communication of occurrences.
