Resumo: The aim of this study was to describe mortality from traffic accidents in Aracaju city, capital of Sergipe state, Brazil, in 2013. It is a descriptive study based on the collection of data available in the Death Certificate and complemented with information from the Superintendência Municipal de 32 Transportes e Trânsito (SMTT) of Aracaju. The deaths by ATT of residents and occurred in the city of Aracaju in 2013 were considered. Mortality was higher among men (79.5%) with a mortality coefficient (CM per 100,000 inhabitants) of 22.3. The age group of 20 to 29 years old (24.4%) with CM of 15.4, followed by those over 60 (20.5%) with CM of 28.9. As for the types of accidents are collisions highlighted (50.0%) with CM: 6.5, and pedestrians (32.1%) with CM: 4.2. The categories motorcyclist and pedestrian with 51.3% (CM: 6.7) and 30.8% (CM: 4.0) of deaths, respectively. It was verified that 56.4% of the deaths occurred in the hospital and the time elapsed between the event and the death, 65.4% died on the same day of the event. Most deaths occurred on weekends (42.3%), and in the 3rd Region of Health. The study made it possible to identify the characteristics of the victims and areas of greater frequency of automobile accidents, contributing to the appropriate interventions of the sectors involved.

Estudo descritivo, com coleta de dados na Declaração de Óbito e na Superintendência Municipal de Transportes e Trânsito de Aracaju. Foram considerados os óbitos por ATT de residentes e ocorridos no município de Aracaju, em 2013. A mortalidade foi maior entre os homens (79,5%) com coeficiente de mortalidade (CM por cem mil habitantes) de 22,3. A faixa etária dos 20 aos 29 anos (24,4%) com CM de 15,4, seguida dos maiores de 60 anos (20,5%) com CM de 28.9. Quanto aos tipos de acidentes destacaram-se as colisões (50,0%) com o CM: 6,5, e os atropelamentos (32,1%) com CM: 4,2. As categorias motociclista e pedestre com 51,3% (CM: 6,7) e 30,8% (CM: 4,0) dos óbitos, respectivamente. Verificou-se que 56,4% dos óbitos ocorreram no hospital e quanto ao tempo decorrido entre o evento e o óbito, 65,4% foi a óbito no mesmo dia do evento. A maior parte dos óbitos ocorreu nos finais de semana (42,3%), e na 3ª Região de Saúde.
