The work reflects on the importance of literacy and the contribution of it to the development of the human being. The study is based on the oral narrative of a literate but not literate person, where in the same story his life trajectory in the school environment and the non acquisition of reading and writing, which did not prevent him from developing in the middle the society. The analysis is articulated to the studies of Paulo Freire, LE GOFF, among other authors. It is concluded that literacy is independent of the literacy process, the non- literate man, is not an empty being, because the knowledge of the world, precedes the acquisition of the knowledge of reading and writing.
