Resumo: Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by the accumulation of adipose tissue, with the influence of multiple factors. Several studies point to a probable 9 association between the consumption of dietary calcium (and/or dairy products) and the regulation of body weight, modulating the lipid metabolism in adipocyte, which has an important role in the prevention and control of obesity. Objective: To evaluate dietary consumption of calcium in adults and its association with adiposity.Methodology: 102 adults participated in this cross-sectional study and they are users of the Medical Specialties Center of the city of Lagarto/Sergipe. These individuals were allocated into two groups: eutrophy (n = 43) and overweight (n = 59), besides being subjected to socio-economic assessment, anthropometric (body mass index, waist and neck circumference) and food intake through food 12:00 am reminders. The data were analyzed by SPSS (version 20.0), adoptinga = 5%.Results: The data collection had the participation of 126 individuals, and 102 of them completed the two 24-hour questionnaires, which was required for the present study. 82 participants were female (80.39%) and 20 (19.60%) male, with an average age of 36.12 years. In the anthropometric assessment, it was noted that 42.15% of participants were eutrophic and 57.84% were overweight. In the waist circumference, the overweight group showed an median 90.00 cm and eutrophic group of 72.00 cm. The circumference of the neck was 32.00 cm to the eutrophic and 35,00 cm for the overweight group. We have seen a low calcium intake, 354 mg/day to the eutrophic and 308 mg/day to overweight group. Thus, any correlation between obesity parameters and dietary calcium intake was found. Conclusion: Through this study, it was possible to conclude that the studied population presents low consumption of calcium in the diet, regardless of nutritional status. Calcium consumption was not related to anthropometric parameters.
