The present research had the general objective of analyzing the “Municipal Public Archive of São Cristóvão, Sergipe” from the specialized perspective of document management. As for the specific objectives, the research verified the implementation of information retrieval resources and services to meet the informational needs of the community served, and recommendations of procedures to support the future perspective of remote access to searchable digital documents, having the Public Archive of São Cristóvão as an empirical field. The typology of research chosen was applied, with exploratory objectives, descriptive level, with bibliographic, exploratory and documentary procedures. The analysis performed was of a qualitative-quantitative nature, characterizing the proposed work as a mixed study. The line of research adopted is Information and Knowledge Management. The concepts presented in the theoretical framework, verifying the appropriations with Information Science, were used in the analysis of data collected in the field. The discussion of the results presented verified that the Public Archive of São Cristóvão is an information unit that fulfills the social function of a memory device, representing an environment for managing information and knowledge relevant to the identity of the São Cristovenes and the Brazilian people. As final recommendations, the research proposes the implementation of a document management policy, as well as the implementation of an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), to facilitate the retrieval of information by potential users of the Public Archive of São Cristóvão, the fourth city in Brazil.
