This research sought to carry out a diagnosis of the current state of the municipal public archive in the city of Indiaroba-SE regarding document management. In the theoretical framework there is the connection between archivology and librarianship, the librarian's profile and his attributions, concepts of archive, document management, documentary mass, archival diagnosis, conservation and preservation, and technology and its aspects in the municipal archives. The research is exploratory and descriptive, with a qualitative approach. It involved the case study with information gathering, literature review, field research and observation of the archive environment. The interview was supported by the questionnaire with open questions.,. The findings are compatible with the reality of the countless Brazilian public archives. The diagnosis of the referred environment was made, taking into account the general objective and, specifically, it presented the similarities and differences between archive and library,, interconnection between two sciences - library and economics and archival; characterized the Municipal Public Archive,, described its physical, documentary structure and the staff framework; analyzed how documents are stored; and suggest the use of technological resources to facilitate the retrieval of information / documents; as well as suggested document management strategies for the archive. There were serious structural problems, insufficient technological resources and mainly the lack of trained professionals. In the librarian's view, according to the research results, although the archives are important for the preservation of institutional memory, this studied file does not serve this purpose. Suggestions for improvements were made.
