Nível de conhecimento dos estudantes de medicina sobre dispositivos intrauterinos na universidade federal de Sergipe

The maternal conditions are the leading cause of death among women between 15 to 19 years globally. A quarter of intentional abortions in the world is also related to this age. Adolescent pregnancy greatly impacts the lives of these women, as well as prenatal management, resulting in high rates of unfavorable outcomes to the maternal-fetal binomial. The use of intrauterine devices (IUDs) in nulliparous women stands out as an important option to combat the problem. They face barriers to its use both among patients and among health professionals. This study aimed to describe the knowledge of medical students at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) about IUDs; recognize the first choice contraceptive method for referral among students and identify differences according to year of medical school. A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was conducted through a questionnaire, with objective and assertive questions about key points in the understanding of IUDs that were judged as true or false by students. Questionnaires with 4 or more statements judged correctly were considered satisfactory. The questionnaires were applied at the University Hospital of UFS. For the inferential analysis, the categorical variables were evaluated using the Chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test between more than two groups with ANOVA, followed by Tukey’s post test. The significance level was set at 0.05. The study included 219 students of the last three years of Medical school, with a mean age of 24.5 ± 3.79 years old, with 122 (55.70%) male and 97 (44.29%) female participants. Among the years of Medical school, 64 (29.22%) were from the fourth year, 89 (40.63%) of the fifth and 66 (30.13%) of the sixth. The vast majority of students – 214 (98%) – reported knowing the IUDs and 216 (99%) also showed satisfactory knowledge about the method. In the comparison of responses to each item, there was a statistically different only in relation to item A (p=0.017). The fourth year had more incorrect answers when compared to the others (30%, 12% and 15%). There was no significative difference in the choice of methods to prescribe, either in the comparison between genders or years. It is conclude, therefore, that the vast majority of students know IUDs and have satisfactory knowledge about the method
