Resumo: Skin diseases have a remarkable impact on the life of those affected and their health conditions. In order to allow a more effective and economical treatment for such disorders, new therapeutic approaches have been continuously investigated. Due to its high therapeutic and phytochemical potential, chamomile emerges as a pleasant alternative. Thus, several scientific studies have been developed to present evidence of their effects that are recognized by traditional communities. Therefore, this patent review aimed to catalog inventions that have used chamomile as the active component for skin disease treatment in order to assess the status of the technological development of the bioproducts. The patent bases used in this work was ESPACENET, USPTO, WIPO and INPI, by using the descriptors "Matricaria" or "Chamomilla", along with the International Patent Classification (IPC) A61K and A61P. The patents collected were verified by two reviewers and were only included if demonstrated the therapeutic action on the skin through experimental or clinical studies, and presented chamomile species in its formulation. A total of 1880 patents were found, however only 20 patents were selected. They described the therapeutic activities of chamomile between the years 1982 and 2017, distributed in Asian, European and American continents. The most prevalent type of study was the clinical study (65.21%) and the main skin alterations studied were wound healing and burns (23.07%), erythema and rosacea (19.23%), eczema and deshidrosis (11.53%) and dermatitis (7.69%). The main properties described in the analyzed patents were antiinflammatory (19.35%), antimicrobial and humectant (9.67%). Moreover, the inventions were able to reduce skin spots and hyperpigmentation by UV radiation (11.53%), skin peeling and promote improvement of the damaged stratum corneum (7.69%). The main pharmaceutical formulations were topically applied as creams (27.27%), ointments (9.09%), lotions (9.09%), solutions (9.09%), textile dressing (4.54%) and bandage (4.54%). From the technological point of view, chamomile is an important source of bioactive secondary metabolites suitable for the treatment of varied skin diseases.
