The theme about reading rooms is gaining ground in Library Science and Education, due to the application of the law 12,244/2010, which establishes a period of ten years for elementary schools to create their libraries with the performance of librarians. However, reading rooms become more used instead of libraries due to budget issues. Due to this presence, the objective of the research is to know the academic production on reading rooms, delimiting itself to the repositories of federal universities in the Northeast of Brazil, produced between 2010 and 2020, to analyze which definitions and characteristics are attributed to these spaces by the authors and understand how the theme of social vulnerability is inserted in the respective academic works on reading rooms. The problem is: how are reading rooms defined and characterized by the communities in which they are inserted, through scientific productions in the Northeast of Brazil? From the methodological aspects, a bibliographic research with a quali-quantitative approach was adopted, using a sample of 404 works retrieved from the researched repositories. As a result, it was observed that reading rooms are treated, most of the time, only in terms of their dimension and physical structure, without further elaboration and description of their activities. There is a greater location of classrooms in schools, with a noticeable concern to build such spaces in vulnerable places. It is expected that this work will contribute to a greater awareness of the importance of libraries, so that institutions can build libraries with adequate infrastructure, and with the hiring of librarians, raising awareness for the construction of these environments in places of vulnerability, contributing to training personal and critical education.
