RESUMO: O presente artigo reflete sobre o ensino de Língua Portuguesa (como língua materna) que desconsidera a função comunicativa da língua a as mudanças decorrentes de seu uso para pautar-se unicamente na dicotomia “certo” e “errado” da Gramática Tradicional. Tomamos como ponto de partida para nossa reflexão o alarde feito pela mídia com a aprovação pelo MEC do livro didático Viver e Aprender – por uma vida melhor, de Heloisa Ramos. Nele a autora trata de variação linguística, lança luz à diferença das modalidades escrita e oral da língua, expõe a necessidade de adequação do discurso à situação comunicativa, sempre alertando o educando para o fato de a norma padrão ser a de maior prestígio em nossa sociedade. Mesmo acreditando ser também função da escola possibilitar ao aluno a apropriação da língua padrão, defendemos que o fato de os educandos serem falantes nativos da língua não pode ser desconsiderado no processo de ensino-aprendizagem, assim como não pode ser negada a existência de variedades diferentes da padrão. Livro didático.        ABSTRACT: In this article we think about teaching of Portuguese language (as mother tongue) that ignores the communicative function of language and the changes arising from its use. We reflect on the teaching based on the dichotomy "right" and "wrong" of Traditional Grammar. The beginning of our reflection is the fuss made by the media with the approval by the MEC of textbook Viver e Aprender – por uma vida melhor, by Heloisa Ramos. In it the author presents linguistic variation, sheds light unlike the modalities written and oral language, exposes the need to adapt speech to the communicative situation, always prompting the student to the fact that the standard is the most prestigious variety in our society. Even believing  that one of the school functions is teach the student the standard variety, we also believe the fact that the students are native speakers of the language can not be disregarded in the teaching-learning process.
