RESUMO: O gênero fantástico é produzido de forma corrente no século XIX. Em uma das abordagens da literatura fantástica, a hesitação, resultado da tensão do aspecto verossímil e do sobrenatural em um único texto, é o substrato ficcional da literatura fantástica e, por meio de estratégias narrativas, requer a participação do leitor implícito no texto. Esse trabalho pretende demonstrar no conto “O pé da múmia”, de Théophile Gautier, publicado em 1840, inserido no contexto da modernidade, que vem a partir do Romantismo ocidental, a construção do efeito fantástico proposta pelo teórico Tzvetan Todorov. Observando, também, como esse texto pode dialogar com determinado contexto histórico francês. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Modernidade. Literatura fantástica. “O pé da múmia”. Gautier.        ABSTRACT: The Fantastic genre is frequently produced in the nineteenth century. In one of the approaches of fantastic literature, the hesitation, an effect which comes from the tension of the verisimilar aspect and also from the supernatural one in a single text, is the fictional essence of requires the participation the fantastic literature and, by using narration strategies, of the implicit reader in the text. This paper aims to show, in the tale “O pé da múmia”, by Theophile Gautier, published in 1840, context of modernity, which comes from western Romanticism, the inserted in the construction of the fantastic effect proposed by Tzvetan Todorov.
