Resumo: The article discusses the macropolitical environment in Brazil in recent years, involving the attacks that fundamentalist religious groups, new radical right organizations and authoritarian politicians make on the school, to prevent the educational approach to gender and sexuality issues. It shows the importance of the approach, in the school culture, of gender and sexuality issues. It links this approach with education in and for human rights and with the construction of democratic education.It establishes connections between this link and the more general struggles in favor of democracy,insisting that issues of gender and sexuality are more than subjects of study, and are not just questionsof the order of customs or morals. Gender and sexuality are structuring issues of political life, involvingdisputes over the distribution of power.

Muestra la importancia del abordaje, en la cultura escolar, de las cuestiones de género y sexualidad. Vincula este enfoque con la educación en y para los derechos humanos y con la construcción de una educación democrática. Establece conexiones entre este vínculo y las luchas más generales a favor de la democracia, insistiendo en que las cuestiones degénero y sexualidad son más que temas de estudio, y no son sólo cuestiones de orden costumbristao moral. Mostramos a importância da abordagem, na cultura escolar, das questões em gênero e sexualidade. Vinculamos essa abordagem com a educação em e para os Direitos Humanos e com a construção de uma educação democrática. Estabelecemos conexões entre essa vinculação e as lutas mais gerais em favor da democracia, insistindo que as questões em gênero e sexualidade são mais do que temas de estudos, e não são apenas questões da ordem dos costumes ou da moral.
