Science, Gender, and Race in conversations about Hidden Figures

Resumo: In this paper, we analyze perceptions about black women in science, based on conversations about the film Hidden Figures. The movie portrays the trajectory of three black female NASA scientists, in the context of racial segregation in the USA in the 1960s. Through Content Analysis, we investigate comments on Letterboxd, in order to identify meanings produced by viewers. The results indicate the predominance of comments that celebrate the leading role of black women, even though they reinforce the appeal to the individual merit in the face of structural asymmetries. There are also criticisms of the maintenance of conservative stereotypes, such as the “white savior”. These conversations reveal intersectional crossings in the public perception of science and the relevance of more diverse media representations of scientific activity in terms of gender and race.

La película retrata la trayectoria de tres científicas negras de la NASA, en el contexto de la segregación racial en los Estados Unidos en la década de 1960. Mediante el Análisis de Contenido, investigamos los comentarios en Letterboxd con el fin de identificar los significados producidos por los espectadores. Los resultados indican el predominio de comentarios que celebran el papel protagónico de la mujer negra, aunque refuerzan la apelación al mérito individual ante las asimetrías estructurales. También hay críticas al mantenimiento de estereotipos conservadores, como el del “salvador blanco”. Estas conversaciones revelan cruces interseccionales en la percepción pública de la ciencia y la relevancia de representaciones mediáticas más diversas de la actividad científica en términos de género y raza.Neste artigo, analisamos percepções acerca de mulheres negras na ciência a partir das conversações sobre o filme Estrelas Além do Tempo. A produção retrata a trajetória de três cientistas negras da NASA, no contexto de segregação racial dos EUA nos anos 1960. Por meio da Análise de Conteúdo, investigamos comentários na rede social Letterboxd com o objetivo de identificar sentidos articulados pelos espectadores. Os resultados indicam o predomínio de comentários que celebram o protagonismo de mulheres negras, porém reforçam o apelo ao mérito individual frente a assimetrias estruturais. Há ainda críticas à manutenção de estereótipos conservadores, como o “salvador branco”.
