Science, Technology, and Innovation (ST&I) against COVID-19: contributions from Brazilian public universities

Resumo: Brazilian universities, with great emphasis on public ones, mobilized financial and human resources to face the challenges triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many institutions, all over Brazil, have established task forces, organize a very large range of actions, in the field of teaching, research, and extension, and also carry out actions of solidarity and support to the internal and external communities. In addition, they have also engaged in the international effort of science, technology, and innovation (ST&I) seeking to contribute to the advancement of knowledge about COVID-19 and the new Coronavirus, in different areas, and in offering products and solutions to face the harmful effects of the pandemic. Because of this evidence, this article presents findings from exploratory research that mapped the actions of Brazilian universities in the field of ST&I. Empirical data were collected between April 2020 and October 2021. Along with the presentation of the results, we sought to carry out a discussion on the role of the university in society, based on multidisciplinary literature that includes texts from the field of studies on higher education, social studies of science and technology, among others.

Muitas instituições, Brasil afora, estabeleceram forças-tarefas, organizaram uma gama muito grande de ações, no campo do ensino, pesquisa e extensão, mas também realizaram ações de solidariedade e de amparo às comunidades interna e externa. Além disso, elas também se engajaram no esforço internacional de ciência, tecnologia e inovação (CT&I) buscando contribuir para o avanço do conhecimento sobre a COVID-19 e o novo Coronavírus, em diferentes áreas, e no oferecimento de produtos e soluções para o enfrentamento dos efeitos nocivos da pandemia. Em vista dessas evidências, este artigo apresenta achados de pesquisa exploratória que mapeou as ações de universidades brasileiras, no campo da CT&I. Os dados empíricos foram coletados entre abril de 2020 e outubro de 2021.
