Justice and utility: reviewing the basis of coexistence between Science and traditional knowledge

The consolidation of the modern paradigm as the basis for the overall approach to the world brought questions regarding cultural diversity, including those concerning knowledge production. The main objective of this work is to underline the fact that, historically, we have made Science a system distinguished by factors that disregard and silence other knowledges regimes, such as the traditional knowledge. Through a bibliographic study, we demonstrate the existence of a strong bias towards hegemony, the need to create means to overcome this trait, and the fruitful possibilities for fairer and useful coexistence with the traditional knowledges’ regimes. After presenting a successful case on linking traditional and scientific knowledge, we finally consider a position by us, the scientists, is needed, so that Science can fulfill the role of contributing to the welfare of humanity.
