The Meaning of Work for Funeral Director

Resumo: The aim of this article is to investigate the meaning of work for funeral director. This is a descriptive and qualitative study. The data were collected through interviews with semi-structured script and analyzed through lexical analysis and content. It is observed that, despite the difficulties and limitations of his professional performance, the funeral director finds meaning in their work, mainly through the valuation and recognition of his service by customers. This research contributes to studies on the meaning of work, especially with socially devalued professionals who are considered "dirty", in addition to expanding the discussion about the importance of work for individuals that, despite having no pleasure in performing their activities, seek to perform well due to other elements. New categories are proposed for complementing the theme, such as satisfaction and preconception.

Trata-se de um estudo descritivo e de natureza qualitativa. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas com roteiro semiestruturado e analisados por meio de análise lexical e de conteúdo. Os discursos apontam que, apesar das dificuldades e limitações de sua atuação profissional, os agentes funerários encontram sentido em seu trabalho, principalmente por meio da valorização e reconhecimento do seu serviço pelos clientes. Esta pesquisa contribui para os estudos sobre o sentido do trabalho, principalmente com profissionais desvalorizados socialmente e que são considerados “sujos”, além de ampliar a discussão sobre a importância do trabalho para os indivíduos que, mesmo não tendo prazer na execução de suas atividades, procuram ter bom desempenho em virtude de outros elementos.
