Case study and action research: similarities and distinction between the methods

Resumo: The case study is a recommended method for research that requires in-depth analysis of the object of study, with many elements and categories involved. Action research, on the other hand, presupposes practice, an intervention in the context studied to solve a problem. Usually, we find the wrong classification of these methods or a mixture of their definitions. After all, what are its main characteristics? Why are they confused? What are their similarities and differences? To answer these questions, we analyzed these methods based on bibliographical research, creating a comparative table that allowed to identify their similarities and distinctions. Among the differences, the objectives of each method, the role of the researcher, the approaches to the theme, problem and object of study, and the relationships with other actors or study context stand out. The steps for conducting it are distinct, as is the articulation between theory and practice. Considering that the characteristics identified in each method, as well as their relationships, had theoretical references as source of research, we understand that the contribution of this article lies in the possibility of exploring the practice and perceptions of researchers with regard to its application. In this way we could contribute to overcoming some of the controversies surrounding the identity of each method. Furthermore, we consider that the effort undertaken to understand their similarities and distinctions can contribute to more solid and coherent methodological definitions in scientific production, when seeking alignment between research purposes and the best epistemological-technical paths to explore a phenomenon.

La investigación acción, por otra parte, presupone una práctica, una intervención en el contexto estudiado para resolver un determinado problema. Generalmente nos encontramos con una clasificación errónea de estos métodos o una combinación de sus definiciones. Al fin y al cabo, ¿cuáles son sus principales características? ¿Por qué están confundidos? ¿Cuáles son sus similitudes y diferencias? Para responder a estas preguntas, analizamos estos métodos a partir de una investigación bibliográfica, creando un cuadro comparativo que nos permitió identificar similitudes y distinciones entre ellos. Entre las diferencias destacan los objetivos de cada método, el rol del investigador, los enfoques del tema, problema y objeto de estudio, y las relaciones con otros actores o contexto de estudio. Los pasos para realizarlo son distintos, como también lo es la articulación entre teoría y práctica. Considerando que las características identificadas en cada método, así como sus relaciones, tuvieron referentes teóricos como fuente de investigación, entendemos que el aporte de este artículo radica en la posibilidad de explorar la práctica y las percepciones de los investigadores respecto a su aplicación. Además, consideramos que el esfuerzo realizado por comprender sus similitudes y distinciones puede contribuir a definiciones metodológicas más sólidas y coherentes en la producción científica, al buscar el alineamiento entre los propósitos de la investigación y los mejores caminos epistemológico-técnicos para develar el fenómeno a explorar.O estudo de caso é um método recomendado para pesquisas que requerem análise aprofundada do objeto de estudo, com muitos elementos e categorias envolvidas. Já a pesquisa-ação pressupõe uma prática, uma intervenção no contexto estudado para resolver determinado problema. Usualmente, encontramos a classificação equivocada desses métodos ou uma mistura de suas definições. Afinal, quais são suas principais características? Por que são confundidos? O que possuem de semelhança e diferença? Para responder essas questões, analisamos esses métodos a partir de pesquisa bibliográfica, elaborando um quadro comparativo que permitiu constatar semelhanças e distinções entre ambos. Entre as diferenças, destacam-se os objetivos de cada método, o papel do pesquisador, as abordagens de tema, problema e objeto de estudo, e as relações com demais atores ou contexto de estudo. As etapas para sua condução são distintas, assim como a articulação entre teoria e prática. Considerando que as características identificadas em cada método, assim como suas relações, tiveram referenciais teóricos como fonte de pesquisa, entendemos que a contribuição deste artigo está na possibilidade de explorarmos, a partir dele, a prática e as percepções de pesquisadores no que diz respeito a sua aplicação. Desse modo poderíamos contribuir para superar algumas das controvérsias em torno da identidade de cada método.
