Resumo: | This article aims to broaden the debate on the presidential nomination for the position of Justiceof the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) by exploring the mechanisms through whichexpectations of the Justices’ behavior can be anticipated. After analyzing the current discussionon the topic, which highlights influence as one of the main objectives in the selection of STFnominees, we present and discuss the mechanisms by which this influence can be expected bythe president: ideology, loyalty, and gratitude. Based on this, we formulate hypotheses about thejudicial behavior of Justices who have been nominated through one of these mechanisms, at theexpense of the others, and provide anecdotal evidence that presidents nominate Justices withexpectations of loyalty and gratitude. Additionally, we observe that the manifestation of theseelements in the behavior of the Justices, although criticized, is also expected by other politicalactors. |
