Faraday’s Electric Motor: a construction for museums and didactic laboratories

Resumo: Historically, Michael Faraday (1791-1867) can be cited as thecreator of the first “motor” capable of producing a continuousmovement due to the action of an electric current. In the third decadeof the XIX century, Faraday presented two versions of thatprimitive electric motor: one with mobile stem and fixed magnetand another with a fixed stem and mobile magnet. The first one isa simple construction, being easily found in sites on the internet.The second version needs a much larger continuous current whichmakes its construction difficult. This work elaborates aconstruction of the two versions, adapted to the residentialelectric energy that can be utilized by museums and didactic laboratoriesinterested in this type of demonstration.

Na terceira década do século XIX, Faraday apresentou duas versões desse primitivo motor elétrico: uma, com haste móvel e ímã fixo, e outra, com haste fixa e ímã móvel. A primeira é de simples montagem, sendo facilmente encontrada em sites na internet. Por outro lado, a segunda versão necessita de uma corrente contínua bem maior, o que dificulta sua construção.
