Resumo: Archival functions are understood as what is expected in the performance of the Archivology professional. The archival trajectory corroborated that the Canadians, more precisely represented by Carol Couture and Yves Rosseau, admited seven functions existing within the area. They understood them as tasks that the archivist must perform. And as a function it can be primordial for the conception of the other, interconnecting. Since knowledge (scientific) and doing (practice) are, in a sense, intrinsic in the area, it is understood that the archival functions must be part of the archival institutions. These functions are: production / creation; evaluation, acquisition, classification, description, diffusion and preservation, which should be the activities to be carried out by an archival institution. That is, if all of them are correctly executed, the level of organization and management tends to be in a formidable quality. This article aims to present the functions and their importance to help delimit what should be the role of the archivist and institutions, thus an attempt to open the debate about which ministry / secretariat the institution should be tied.
