Registros civis no Brasil: um olhar da Arquivologia

Used for different purposes by different entities, the civil registries constitute a relevant set of documents for the country and its population. This set needs, like all archives, the application of archival methodologies. With more than 100 years of document production, with more than seven thousand establishments with Natural Persons Civil Registry attributions spread throughout Brazil, new challenges are daily presented to Archival Science regarding the creation, treatment, preservation and access to this collection. In this sense, the general objective of this research is to analyze the scientific and normative production about civil registries with Archival Science as background. The specific objectives are: a) To identify the scientific production about civil records; b) To present the norms about Civil Records in Brazil, which are related to archival practice; c) To reflect about the scientific and normative production related to civil records, based on Archival Science. The methodology used was bibliographic and documental research, the first carried out in databases recognized by the area and the second in Brazilian legislative portals. As results it was possible to identify that there is still little scientific production on the subject in the area. As for the norms, we identified ordinances that directly impact the archival work, requiring a specialized look from the professional archivist to perform these activities. It is considered that there is still a long way to go in the area of civil records, and that a greater dialogue between Archival Science and the regulatory bodies is necessary for the establishment of a global policy for the treatment and preservation of these collections.
