The photograph as an archivistic document and its place in municipal archives: the Public Archive of the city of Belo Horizonte

This work presents a case study about the place that the photograph as an archival document occupies in the municipal archives, being, therefore, represented the scenario of the Public Archive of the City of Belo Horizonte. Thus, the course of the photographs produced by the public administration of Belo Horizonte is indicated, as well as the quantity of photographic records kept by the archival institution in question and the possibilities and challenges arising from their custody. The study points out that by 2015, the Archive had 828.031 photographs and that most of this number is composed of digital records. In addition, it is pointed out that all the photographs of the executive branch of the Belo Horizonte administration have permanent custody, in this sense it is questioned whether the Public Archive of the City of Belo Horizonte would not be relegating extreme value to the photographs and, nevertheless, The institution has the human, material and financial resources to preserve and promote access to digital photographs. In spite of this, the work points out that the Archive manages to ensure that the photographs it preserves are considered archival documents, since they are understood within its documentary set, from its production context (producing organ and activity).
